Salted Caramel Syrup

I love this caramel over vanilla ice cream with toasted coconut.  I can't remember who started this ice cream trend in my neighborhood, but I'm glad they did.  It's so good.

3/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup half and half cream
1 tablespoon caro syrup
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt

Melt butter in an extra large saucepan over medium heat.
Add sugar, milk and caro syrup.
Increase heat and boil 5 minutes stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in baking soda.  (Warning: This will foam up so if your pan isn't deep enough, you will have a big mess on your hands.)
Add vanilla and stir until foam dissolves.

Makes about 2 1/4 cups.
